OMERS Information Sheet (Permanent Full Time/Eligible Employees Only)

 

What is OMERS?

The Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) is one of Canada's leading pension funds. OMERS is a defined benefit pension plan serving local government employees across Ontario.

Eligibility

Town of Caledon employees are required to participate in OMERS when they are permanent, full-time employees and have the option to participate when they meet the criteria established by OMERS for Other Than Continuous Full-Time employees (OTCFT).

As an OTCFT employee, you are eligible for OMERS when, in each of two immediately preceding calendar years:

  • you worked at least 700 hours with an OMERS employer, or
  • you earned at least 35% of the Year's Maximum Pensionable Earnings (YMPE) with an OMERS employer

OTCFT employees are eligible to join OMERS January 1st of the year following the year they meet the criteria. If you wish to determine immediate eligibility when starting employment with the Town, you must provide proof of hours/earnings prior to the first two year milestone.

Contribution Rates

The contribution rates for OMERS are as follows:

 

Normal retirement age 65 members

On earnings up to CPP earnings limit

9.0%

On earnings over CPP
earnings limit

14.6%

Normal retirement age 60 members

On earnings up to CPP earnings limit

9.2%

On earnings over CPP
earnings limit

15.8%

 

Enrolment

The Town of Caledon will immediately enroll permanent full-time staff, and will provide eligible OTCFT employees with an offer of OMERS membership (Form 104) to complete and return to payroll. This form must be completed regardless of whether or not you elect to join OMERS.

Additional Voluntary Contributions

Dress Code Guidelines

 

The Town of Caledon supports a safe, positive work environment in which all employees can contribute in a productive, professional and comfortable atmosphere. These guidelines uphold the Town’s professional image and are aligned with the community we serve.

 
Guidelines

These guidelines apply primarily to all non-uniformed employees in the Town’s offices and facilities. In general, the Town supports a mix of formal and business casual attire.

For many positions, Town logo wear or personal protective clothing is a requirement during a normal workday. In circumstances, when you must attend work-related meetings and/or events that are not within your normal work environment, you must dress appropriately and respect the dress code guidelines.

Your job duties, responsibilities, and degree of client/community contact will govern the definition of your regular business-appropriate attire. The expectation is that all staff will use good judgment in determining what type of clothing is considered appropriate.

Personal safety must also be taken into consideration and your clothing should address any safety issues within your work environment.

Clothing that works well for yard work, the beach, exercise sessions and sports is not normally appropriate for a place of business.

Dress guidelines cannot cover all situations so, as Town employees, we must exercise our good judgment in what is generally acceptable. 

First impressions count! Ask yourself – are you projecting a positive and professional image of the Town? Are your colleagues or Town Hall visitors comfortable in your presence?

The best advice? If you’re wondering if something is acceptable to wear to work, ask your Manager or Human Resources. 

Accountabilities

 
Employees:

  • Using good judgment and dressing appropriately at work
  • Checking with your Manager if you have a question about appropriate attire

 

Managers:
  • Advising employees about their attire, including safety issues
  • Ensuring employees follow the dress guidelines for their department

 

HR:
  • Providing interpretation and advice to managers and employees, when required

 

Examples:

Here are some examples of what’s considered inappropriate:

  • Sweat pants, short shorts, biking shorts, leggings, sun/beach dresses, spaghetti straps, tank tops, crop tops, sweatshirts, flip-flops, shirts with potentially offensive words, terms, graphics, logos, etc.
  • For those that participate in “Dress Down Fridays” in support of charity, jeans, T-shirts, and more relaxed clothing are allowed. Employees still need to dress in a presentable and professional manner. “Dress down” does not mean sloppy.
  •  In  all  cases,  clothing  that  is  frayed,  ripped,  too  revealing  or too loose/tight  fitting  is  not appropriate.
  • Remember to take into consideration your schedule for the day and dress accordingly.
  • Personal grooming, hygiene and neatness are all part of your appearance and should reflect a professional image.
  • In general, your appearance should:
    • Be consistent with job duties
    • Reflect professionalism
    • Convey respect for those with whom you interact
