Articling Program
The Town’s Legal Services Division provides legal support in a timely manner to a variety of municipal operations across all Town departments and Caledon Council, ensuring legislative and regulatory compliance.
The Articling Program is designed to provide a well-rounded experience that prepares students for a successful legal career. Students will be part of a team that works with integrity and delivers innovative results that impact the daily lives of residents, local businesses and tourists.
Articling students will gain exposure to a broad range of legal issues, participate in client meetings, conduct legal research, draft legal documents and assist with litigation and negotiations.
Areas of specialization
Municipal Law |
Students will develop an understanding of municipal governance, legislation and regulatory compliance. You will work on by-law interpretation and enforcement, municipal powers, procurement and governance policies. You will assist in drafting legal opinions, reviewing a variety of contracts and advising Town departments under the guidance of experienced lawyers on legal issues affecting various municipal operations. |
Litigation, Prosecutions and Administrative Proceedings |
Students will gain hands-on experience in civil litigation, including seeking injunctive relief and other types of applications, and administrative law proceedings, such as the Human Rights Tribunal. You will have the opportunity to assist with hearing preparation, drafting records and motion materials, attend court proceedings and observe negotiations and mediations. Students will work closely with the Town’s Provincial Offences Office/Courts in the preparation of proceedings under the Provincial Offences Act. |
Planning Law |
Students will gain experience in land use planning and development law, including matters before the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT). Students will assist in legal research, preparation of items for hearings and advice on zoning, land use planning and development approvals and agreements. As a student, you will gain valuable insight into how legal frameworks shape the Town’s growth and infrastructure projects. |
Real Estate Services |
Students will assist with a range of real estate matters, including municipal land acquisitions and dispositions, leases, licenses, expropriations, property transactions, and other related agreements. You will work with legal counsel on reviewing agreements, conducting due diligence and supporting real estate negotiation involving Town-owned lands and private sector developments. |
Special Projects |
In addition to the general legal services, articling students may be involved in any number of special projects and Town initiatives. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible to apply for the Town's Articling Program? |
Law students who have completed their law degree and are eligible to article in accordance with the Law Society of Ontario’s (LSO) requirements. |
How long is the articling term? |
Pursuant to the Legislative Services Ontario requirements, the articling term is currently required to be at least eight months and no longer than 10 months. |
Will I receive mentorship during my articling program? |
Yes, articling students receive mentorship with guidance, feedback and support throughout the articling term. |
Will I have opportunities to appear in court or before tribunals? |
Yes, articling students will have the opportunity to appear in court (primarily Provincial Offences) and tribunal hearings and other advocacy opportunities under the supervision of legal counsel. |
Is there an opportunity for full-time employment after the articling term? |
While there is no guarantee of full-time employment, students may be considered for available positions within the Town’s Legal Services Division. |
