Bird flu confirmed at storm water ponds in Bolton and Southfields Village
(January 24, 2025) CALEDON, ON – Caledon’s Municipal Law Enforcement division confirms that there is an outbreak of Avian Influenza (bird flu) at the storm water ponds in Bolton and Southfields Village. Reports from the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC) indicate that the Avian Influenza is from dead geese found near the ponds. There is no transmission to humans reported so far.
The Town is currently working with the CWHC to monitor the areas and coordinate cleanup, but residents are advised to take precautions and avoid the ponds at this time.
The risk of Avian Flu spreading to humans is extremely rare and there are currently no indicators of increasing risk to the public. However, it is strongly recommended by the Public Health Agency of Canada that residents should not handle sick or dead wild birds or other wildlife, as they may be infected with diseases that can spread to humans. Pets should also be kept away from sick or dead wildlife and be kept on a leash.
To help stop the potential spread of viruses, Caledon Animal Services discourages the use of birdfeeders and recommends the removal of existing ones to limit transmission. Cats should also be kept indoors, and birdbaths on private property should be avoided.
