Business Opening: Mamma's Shack
Plenty of Caledon residents have discovered Mamma’s Shack, the restaurant has been open for 6 months and on March 16 they celebrated with a grand opening event. We asked owner Donald Lott to tell us a little more about this breakfast and lunch destination.
Tell us about you and your business.
Mamma's Shack is primarily a family run business. Mamma leads the way managing the day to day of the front of the house. Our son is our head cook and manages the back of the house, ensuring all food quality is above standard and fresh at all time. Papa handles the accounting and financials as well we have a couple of employees who we view as our extended family. Our restaurant seats 42 people and our breakfast and lunch menu offers a wide variety. And, since February, we are open for dinner until 9 pm by reservation on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Why did you get into the business?
This is our first location and we hope to grow and expand in the future. Mamma left the trucking industry to become a waitress a few years back and has since found a passion for food service. Our son has been both a waiter and a cook in the past and is quite good at what he does. The pride and passion he puts into his job and his efforts show on every plate we serve. Our entire family really enjoys being able to offer freshly cooked meals to our customers and we treasure the friendships we have already been able to develop in such a short time.
Why are you locating your business in Caledon?
We decided to open Mamma's Shack in Caledon for a few reasons. I grew up in a small town just north of Sudbury, I really like and appreciate the small-town atmosphere. We felt that Caledon could benefit from a small breakfast and lunch restaurant as there is not many options in the area. We currently live just north in Shelburne, so the commute for us is perfect and one that we welcome daily. Opening in Caledon was a decision that did not require much thought. We knew with good quality food and service that we could count on the community and surrounding area for support.
What’s your favourite thing on the menu?
We have a very large menu with many options and choices. Favorite item? I think hands down, I would have to say our burgers. All made fresh, no fillers, just a yummy 100% beef handmade burger, that gets me every time. We offer many different varieties of burgers ranging from our seniors portion of 6 ounces to our 8, 12, 16 and then for the brave our 24 ounce burger called “The Pinnacle”. Locals of Alton & Caledon are sure to recognize this name.
What is your favourite thing to do in Caledon?
Caledon sure has a lot to offer. The beauty of nature alone is one major attraction that stands out. The many hiking trails, the Badlands or even just something as simple as a Sunday drive. From golf to skiing there is no season without something to keep you busy. Caledon is a friendly, caring and helpful community. My best and most accurate description of the town of Caledon would be it is a big extended family.
