Caledon repeals Mask By-law and Emergency Order
March 21, 2022 – Following the recent provincial announcement about mask requirements, and based on a recommendation from Peel Public Health, the Town of Caledon today repealed both its mask by-law and COVID-19 emergency order.
“This is a day we long hoped for, a big step on the path to normalcy,” said Mayor Allan Thompson. “Thanks to our high vaccination numbers and the tremendous efforts of our frontline health care workers, we’ve finally reached this new milestone. With the spring weather approaching, let's continue to be kind and respect the choice of those who choose to continue to wear masks.”
With the repeal of the by-law, masks will not be required in Town facilities such as libraries and recreation centres, effective immediately.
The state of emergency, first declared in March 2020, was put in place so that the Town could access additional financial and other resources as needed to prevent, reduce or mitigate the effects of COVID-19 on municipal services.
Dr. Loh indicated that, with high community vaccination rates and stable/improving indicators of COVID-19 activity, the Region supports the provincially-announced changes to masking mandates and recommends the lifting of the mandatory masking by-laws in the Region.
Following Dr. Loh’s presentation, Councillors had an opportunity to ask several questions and express their thanks to Dr. Loh, his staff and all the frontline workers who have worked tirelessly since the beginning of the pandemic.
