CECC opening September 5, Grand Opening Celebration to be held on September 16
August 23, 2023 (CALEDON, ON) – Almost two years since Caledon Council broke ground for the 52,000 square-foot expansion, the Caledon East Community Complex (CECC) project is complete and will be open for programs and services on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
“This project has been a significant undertaking for the team,” said Mayor Annette Groves. “The Caledon East Community Complex has been transformed into a state-of-the-art facility and is our largest multi-use recreation facility in Caledon. Completing this elaborate expansion project over three months ahead of schedule is an amazing accomplishment, and a key example of the Town of Caledon’s commitment to providing quality facilities to our residents.”
Some of the new CECC features will include:
- a swimming pool;
- fitness centre and studio;
- library with maker space;
- indoor walking track overlooking a full-size gymnasium;
- an outdoor rink and pavilion (Winter 2024);
- multi-purpose and meeting spaces; and
- a dedicated section for the Caledon Sports Hall of Fame.
Recreation Programming
With programs and services being offered starting on Tuesday, September 5, the Town of Caledon encourages residents to take advantage of a variety of programs and activities for all age levels, including:
- Pool – Fitness Swims, Parent and Child Swims, Public Swims, Aquafit;
- Fitness Classes – Forever Fit, Body Blast, Bootcamp, Sculpt, Zumba, Essential Endurance;
- Gymnasium – Basketball, Pickleball, Badminton, Volleyball;
- Walking Track; and
- Skating – Shinny (Youth, Adult 55+, Women’s), Public Skate.
“Staff have been working hard over the last few months to complete this large expansion project so that the CECC could offer a full slate of fall programming,” said Catherine McLean, Director of Community Services. “The CECC will complement the Caledon East Civic Campus and promote active lifestyles for residents. Recruitment has been in overdrive to help build our team of dedicated staff, eager to hit the ground running on September 5. We’re excited to show the community this expanded community facility with so much to offer!”
In addition to drop-in programs and activities, the full roster of pre-registered fall programming can be found in our Fall 2023 - Winter 2024 Recreation Caledon Guide.

What makes the CECC unique?
In addition to the new recreation amenities the expansion is home to an outdoor dog water station, a new pro-shop and a full-service café that will feature hot and cold food menu items and standard concession options. There are also unique green features throughout the facility to ensure the CECC is as environmentally friendly as possible. These include:
- LED lighting installed throughout the facility, which will save over 186,000 kilowatts per hour annually. That savings is the equivalent of powering 11 homes in Canada for a year.
- The use of electric motors to operate the facility, along with variable frequency drive controllers allows the CECC to reduce its carbon footprint. This green initiative will save 3.36 tons of CO2 emissions per year, the equivalent to the output of 140 propane barbecue tanks.
Operating a facility with ice pads also results in high temperature heat loss from the ice plant. The CECC is equipped to reclaim this heat loss:
- In-floor heating in the library and lobby floor spaces reclaim the heat loss to heat these areas. The repurposing of this heat loss has an environmental impact that is the equivalent to saving 730 trash bags from landfill facilities each year.
- The swimming pool also reclaims the heat lost by the ice plant and repurposes it to heat the pool. This will save the equivalent of 32 acres of forest annually.
Grand Opening Celebration
The CECC is opening for programs and services on September 5, however a larger grand opening celebration is scheduled for Saturday, September 16, 2023. Residents are encouraged to join us at the CECC that day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and experience what the newly expanded facility has to offer, including:
- public swimming;
- youth Shinny and Public skating;
- drop-in activities, and Robotics Demos;
- fitness and sports activities;
- building tours;
- balloon and caricature artists;
- face painting and family friendly activities in the Caledon Parent and Child Centre;
- official opening of the new Caledon East branch of the Caledon Public Library and the dedication of the Cory Trepanier Creativity Studio; and
- the official Ribbon Cutting for the CECC.
“Completing a project of this magnitude months ahead of schedule (working through the pandemic) is an incredible accomplishment by our staff,” said Nathan Hyde, Chief Administrative Officer. “Even though I’ve just had the pleasure of joining the Caledon team this summer, I can appreciate the hard work and dedication it takes to complete projects like this, and I’m thrilled that we can offer a facility that provides much-needed programs and services to this community, with the environment in mind as well.”
