Celebrate Diwali and Halloween safely

CALEDON, ON (October 25, 2024) – The Town of Caledon looks forward to a unique and vibrant day of celebrations as the community comes together to observe both Diwali and Halloween on Thursday, October 31.

“This October 31 offers a unique and wonderful chance to celebrate the diversity of our community,” said Mayor Annette Groves. “We’re proud to embrace the cultural richness and traditions of Diwali and Halloween this year on the same day. I encourage everyone to celebrate safely, look out for one another, and enjoy this special time.”

A Night of Light, Unity and Fun
Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. For the five-day festival taking place from October 29 to November 3 this year, homes will be illuminated with diyas (oil lamps) and families will come together for prayers, feasts and the sharing of sweets. The Town encourages everyone to participate in this beautiful cultural tradition, which fosters peace and unity.

Meanwhile, Halloween, with its spooky costumes, trick-or-treating and pumpkin carving, will bring a festive atmosphere to the streets on October 31. Families are encouraged to join in on the fun by dressing up and safely trick-or-treating throughout Caledon neighbourhoods.

Public Safety Reminders

Traffic & Pedestrian Safety

  • Increased Traffic: Expect higher-than-usual traffic due to both Diwali and Halloween celebrations. Drive cautiously, especially in residential areas where trick-or-treaters will be walking.
  • Visibility: If you are participating in Diwali celebrations outside, ensure your homes and driveways are well-lit to prevent accidents. If you are out for Halloween, please ensure your children wear bright or reflective items of clothing.

Cultural Awareness & Respect

  • Respect for Traditions: Diwali is a festival of lights, and for many, it holds religious significance. Be mindful and respectful of those celebrating both Diwali and Halloween.
  • Shared Spaces: Some residents may be celebrating Diwali prayers or events while others are out trick-or-treating. Please be courteous and respectful of shared public and private spaces.
  • Diya Placement: Place diyas and candles in safe locations, away from areas where trick-or-treaters may walk to avoid fire hazards.

Be mindful of noise and your neighbours

  • Noise awareness: Be mindful of noise levels, particularly in residential neighbourhoods. Some may be sensitive to loud fireworks, especially the elderly, pets and young children.
  • Noise levels: Both celebrations may involve loud activities, but we ask that all residents keep noise levels reasonable, especially after designated quiet hours.

Award-winning Diwali Drone Show returns on November 2
The Town of Caledon is pleased to offer an environmentally friendly and safe alternative to fireworks with the Diwali Drone Light Show on Saturday, November 2 at 7:30 p.m. The viewing area will be in the parking lot of the Southfields Community Centre (225 Dougall Ave, Caledon).
