Change the hour, check the power: Daylight savings occurs March 10, 2024

CALEDON, ON (March 4, 2024) – As the clocks spring forward one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 10, Caledon Fire and Emergency Services recommends residents check the power on their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when changing the time.

“In order for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to function properly, they need to be less than 10 years old and have power – either by battery or hardwired into your electrical system,” explains Deputy Fire Chief Hoffmann. “When you change the time, you should check the date on these devices, check the power, and replace old batteries if needed. As the saying goes, change the hour, check the power.”

To survive a fire, you need early warning and to know what to do when the alarms sound. Working smoke alarms are required on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas. For added protection, it is recommended to also install smoke alarms inside all bedrooms.

In a fire, seconds can make the difference between life and death," said Deputy Hoffmann. "Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Working alarms and a home escape plan gives you the time you need to escape."

Carbon monoxide alarms must also be installed outside all sleeping areas if your home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colourless and poisonous gas that causes flu-like symptoms.

Homeowners, landlords and tenants are responsible for their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.  Tampering with or removing the batteries from your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms is against the law. Failure to comply with the Fire Code can result in a ticket for $360 or a fine of up to $50,000.
