Council adopts Supplementary Aggregate Policy Study Recommendation Report

CALEDON, ON (October 9, 2024) – At the Special Council Meeting on Monday, October 7, Council adopted the Supplementary Aggregate Policy Study Recommendation Report, following extensive consultations over the last two years with the help of consultant Nethery Planning. A significant milestone in Caledon’s long-term planning and sustainable mineral aggregate (pits and quarries) resource management efforts, the complete study will update Caledon’s Future Caledon Official Plan to guide aggregates resource extraction, with environmental stewardship, infrastructure development and community well-being as key principles.

Mayor and Council expressed gratitude to all involved in the study’s development, emphasizing the importance of balancing economic and community growth with the preservation of the natural environment and rural communities.

“This policy represents a forward-thinking approach to resource management that takes into account the needs of our growing community while ensuring we protect our environment for future generations,” said Mayor Annette Groves. “A lot of work has gone into this over the years, and I’d like to extend a sincere thank you to our Town of Caledon staff, stakeholders, environmental experts and community members for contributing to this comprehensive study.”

The Supplementary Aggregate Policy Study includes key provisions that:

  • Ensure sustainable extraction practices in line with provincial regulations

  • Address community concerns such as air quality, land rehabilitation and water resource and natural heritage area protection

  • Support infrastructure development that benefits the community, including road maintenance and transportation planning

  • Provide clear guidelines for the review of future aggregate extraction development applications, ensuring transparency and accountability

“We listened closely to the community and experts throughout this process and we believe this policy strikes the right balance between responsible resource use and protecting Caledon’s environment, providing a stable framework for businesses while protecting natural landscapes and local ecosystems,” commented Eric Lucic, Commissioner, Planning and Economic Development.

The Town’s new official plan, Future Caledon, was adopted at the Council Meeting on March 26, 2024 and is currently being reviewed for approval by the Province. The Council-adopted Supplementary Aggregate Policy Study will be added to the Future Caledon plan as an amendment through the approval process with the Province.
