Council approves new Traffic By-law

June 27, 2024 (CALEDON, ON) – Council, on Tuesday, June 25, approved the new Traffic By-law to help the municipality address current mobility needs and improve road safety. With the approval of this By-law, the municipality can now better address the evolving traffic needs of Caledon’s multi-modal urban environment, including accommodations for active transportation; new mobility equipment such as E-bikes, E-scooters, Cargo Bikes, Roller Skates and Skateboards; updates to speed limits and enhanced language to describe parking infractions.

“This new Traffic By-law is important for enhancing the safety and efficiency of the transportation network across Caledon,” commented Domenica D’Amico, Commissioner, Engineering, Public Works and Transportation, Town of Caledon. “It provides a modern and clear framework for managing traffic flow, providing a safer environment for bicyclists and pedestrians and improves enforcement capabilities to provide an overall better level of service for residents.”

Major Changes

  • Posted Speed on Town Roads: 10 km/h to 20 km/h speed reduction on 34 road segments across Caledon.

  • Overhanging Parking on Boulevard: Overhanging parking on a sidewalk, crosswalk and curb line will be prohibited.

  • Active Transportation: Provisions to regulate pedestrian and bicyclist traffic on sidewalks, bicycle tracks and multi-use paths. Provisions have also been enhanced to regulate safer traffic operation within bicycle lanes.

  • Special Enforcement Areas: Areas along scenic routes where existing “No Parking” and “No Stopping” infractions will have higher fines.

The existing Traffic By-Law was enacted in 2015 and established specific parking restrictions, and traffic controls on Town roads, as well as offences for the enforcement of the by-law. Over the years, industry knowledge, best practices and mobility options have evolved considerably, as well as significant urban development in various parts of the community. The Traffic By-law has been modernized to address the requirements of a mixed rural/urban area in order to continue being an effective tool for enforcement.

Enforcement of the new Traffic By-law will begin in the coming months once the fines have been set and are available in the ticketing system. More updates will be provided, as staff move ahead with implementing the approved by-law.
