Council Highlights (April 26, 2022)
April 26, 2022 -- Council Highlights is a summary of major discussion items presented at Council meetings - circulated immediately following each meeting. You are encouraged to quote from and/or copy this information. Please refer to the minutes at caledon.ca/agenda for an official record of the meeting.
New Fireworks Bylaw
Council adopted a new fireworks bylaw that prohibits the use of fireworks for personal use effective immediately. Public fireworks displays by licensed professionals will still be allowed, with a permit. The permit system will be for large fireworks displays such as community events, motion picture and theatrical pyrotechnics. Council also passed a motion to review the bylaw in 18 months. Promoting care and maintenance of boulevards
A new “encroachments” bylaw – as well as changes to the existing Clean Yards Bylaw – provide homeowners with more scope to do minor landscaping on Town-owned boulevards adjoining their properties.
The new bylaw allows minor alterations or “soft” landscaping, it clarifies guidelines on maintenance standards, and it establishes a permit process for major projects that would “encroach” or alter the Town-owned boulevards.

Caledon twins with Isola del Liri, Italy
Following a meeting between Mayor Thompson and Mayor Quadrini, Council adopted a motion to sign a Twin City Agreement with Isola del Liri. A picturesque “island” city between two branches of the Liri river, Isola del Liri is located in the southern province of Lazio.
In June the Bolton Italian Culture Centre Organization – with support from the Town – is hosting a delegation from Isola del Liri to explore the economic benefits of the twinning opportunity.
Waste Bin Collection Pilot Program
Our parks, trails and public green spaces have seen a dramatic rise in use as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. And as our population grows and our recreation amenities and green spaces increase, we are seeing an increase in garbage in Town parks and green spaces.
Council adopted a motion to investigate monitoring options for waste containers in parks and on trails. The goal would be to use this information to create a smarter, more efficient way to manage waste, keep costs down and help keep our community clean.
