Council Highlights March 21, 2023
Caledon’s Housing Pledge
Today, Council unanimously approved Caledon’s Housing Pledge that outlines how the Town will meet its housing target of 13,000 residential units by 2031 as set by the Province, and the support it will need to achieve it.
The pledge asks the Province to work with the Town to understand the impacts and investments needed to grow in a sustainable and affordable way.
Greenfield Growth Concerns
Caledon’s growth is mostly greenfield (undeveloped lands with no existing infrastructure like water, wastewater and roads). Any new housing in Caledon needs transit, community amenities, parkland and infrastructure which impact the Town’s ability to achieve the Housing Pledge. Funding will be needed for any new development for infrastructure and community and emergency services. This also means Caledon needs to ensure it can plan Caledon with developments that align with the Town’s Growth Management and Phasing Plan and advocate for the environment.
Included with the pledge are joint requests for Provincial commitments with the Region of Peel, City of Brampton, Town of Caledon and City of Mississauga. The requests involve commitment from the development industry, funding and financial tools, infrastructure, facilities and healthcare.
Mayor Groves and Caledon Councillors sign Caledon’s Housing Pledge committing to new housing targets set by the Province. It includes four requests of the government to ensure Caledon grows in a sustainable and affordable way.
