Explore Caledon’s growing cycling network during Bike Month

Each year, the Town of Caledon adds 40 to 50 km of marked cycling routes to provide safe cycling for Caledon residents and visitors.

“Caledon is a bicycle friendly community with numerous cycling events and interesting routes that include bike repair stations, cafes and beautiful parks along the way,” said Mayor Annette Groves. “We’re currently working on our Active Transportation Master Plan to make a healthier, safer and more connected community. I am very pleased we continue to grow our cycling network in our Town for residents and visitors.”

New routes are added based on connections to existing routes, other cities and regional active transportation projects (projects designed to get people using their own power to get from one place to another). A draft network is developed, and the Active Transportation Task Force reviews the network expansion plan for the year and routes are finalized.

“The planning process for annual route selection involves ongoing discussions with task force members and staff and is based on user experience and technical reviews,” said Arash Olia, Manager, Transportation Engineering. “A comprehensive assessment evaluation process, following best practices and Ontario Traffic Manual is then undertaken to select the cycling routes based on criteria such as traffic volume, speed, and road conditions.”

The Town of Caledon’s Transportation Engineering Division, in consultation with the Active Transportation Task Force, has increased the cycling network in Caledon from 80 km in 2020 to 300 km in 2023 and is receiving positive feedback from the community and residents.
