Fireworks bylaw helps ease complaints

May 27, 2022 – Town of Caledon’s new fireworks bylaw, which took effect April 26, 2022, helped reduce the number of personal fireworks this Victoria Day weekend.

After receiving numerous complaints about noise, property damage and safety incidents in 2021, Council passed a bylaw that no longer allows the sale nor discharging of fireworks for personal use in Caledon.

“We received five emails and nine phone calls over the Victoria Day weekend to report personal fireworks activity,” said Mayor Allan Thompson. “That is a marked improvement over previous years and will only get better as more people learn about the bylaw.”

Municipal Law Enforcement Staff, and their enforcement partners, responded to citizens who provided information about residents not following the bylaw. This gave enforcement officers an opportunity to educate those individuals about changes to the fireworks bylaw.

The Town will continue to promote the new bylaw as the July long weekend approaches hoping to see even more compliance.

The bylaw now uses a permit system for large fireworks displays such as community events, motion picture and theatrical pyrotechnics. The permit requires:

  • minimum safe distances of 300m from all vulnerable occupancies (schools, nursing and care facilities), industrial, fuel dispensing facilities and agricultural facilities containing livestock;
  • displays be discharged by a licensed Display Supervisor;
  • sufficient insurance for liability purposes;
  • inspections for safety; and
  • fireworks be planned for acceptable times and locations from dusk to 11 p.m. unless otherwise approved.

For those who want to see fireworks on Canada Day, residents are encouraged to attend the Celebrate Caledon event at Albion Hills Conservation Area from 2 – 10 p.m. on July 1, 2022.
