Improving Traffic Safety in key areas – Caledon Automated Speed Enforcement Program Update
The Town of Caledon is preparing for two new mobile Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras which will rotate among community safety zones where vehicle speed is a concern. The Region of Peel also has a mobile ASE camera for Regional roads in Caledon. Next month, ‘Coming Soon’ signage will be installed in two community safety zones in Bolton (Columbia Way) and Southfields (Kennedy Road), advising drivers that ASE cameras will begin operation in 90 days. After the 90-day advance signage period, ASE cameras take images of vehicles that are detected going over the speed limit - with ASE expected to go live summer 2023.
“These cameras will improve safety in our Community Safety Zones near the schools our children attend and where families, seniors and children walk, bike and play,” said Mayor Annette Groves. “Safety in these areas is of great importance and this technology has made a difference in slowing down driver speed.”
Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) uses a camera and a speed measurement device to help enforce speed limits in community safety zones. ASE technology will help make drivers more aware of their speed and the need to slow down.
“We are ready to roll out Automated Speed Enforcement, an effective tool to get drivers to slow down and drive with care.” said Arash Olia, Manager, Transportation Engineering. “This is a crucial advancement that will improve traffic safety and reduce speeding where it matters the most. We are confident that speed cameras are an effective strategy for improving motorist behaviour and benefit the local community.”
How Does ASE Work?
If a vehicle is faster than the speed limit in an automated speed enforcement area, the ASE system takes an image that is stored and reviewed by a provincial offences officer. The ticket, which contains a copy of the image and an enlargement of the license plate, is mailed to the owner of the vehicle within 30 days of the offence, outlining next steps and the cost of the associated fine. Automated speed enforcement associated tickets will not result in demerit points. For more information, please visit Caledon.ca/ASE.
