Mayor Groves calls on Province to address underfunding of municipal and social services within Peel

July 9, 2024 (CALEDON, ON) – At the General Committee Meeting on Tuesday, July 9, Mayor Annette Groves brought forward a motion calling on the Government of Ontario and local MPPs to work with the Town to address the provincial underfunding of municipal and social services. The motion follows a recent report by the Metamorphosis Network, to Region of Peel Council, that found Peel residents receive less provincial funding than the average resident of other Ontario municipalities.

"Residents of Caledon, and Peel as a whole, deserve a fair deal from the provincial government," said Mayor Annette Groves. "The current underfunding places an unfair burden on property taxpayers. We need sustainable funding solutions to ensure reliable access to social services and to equip our municipalities with the necessary revenue tools to meet the needs of our rapidly growing population."

According to the Metamorphosis data, the current funding gap is to the tune of more than $868 million per year, with Peel residents receiving an average of $578 less per person for municipal and social services as compared to residents in other Ontario municipalities. The report also indicates that the extent of underfunding has grown between 2015 and 2022 placing an enormous burden on Peel municipalities to address the gaps.
