Media Statement: Passing of Hazel McCallion
“Today we awoke to the sad news that former long-time Mississauga Mayor, Hazel McCallion has passed away at the age of 101. Having served as Mayor of Mississauga from 1978 to 2014, her name became synonymous with Mississauga, due to her tremendous popularity, tenacity, and significant contributions to the City she loved and Canadian politics in general.
Hazel lived to serve, having continued to make appearances and serve her community and the province long after her retirement from municipal politics. Staying true to her moniker, “Hurricane” Hazel never stopped moving and leaves a legacy that will never be forgotten.
On behalf of Council and all Caledon residents, I offer our heartfelt condolences to the McCallion family, and everyone who has been inspired by her life of service.
Flags at all Town of Caledon facilities are currently at half-mast in memory of the Honourable David C. Onley, former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. Flags will be raised on Monday, following Mr. Onley’s state funeral, and then lowered to half-mast to honour Hazel McCallion.”
