New outdoor rink to open at Caledon East Community Complex
December 21, 2023 (CALEDON, ON) – The Town of Caledon is delighted to announce that tomorrow, Friday, December 22, a brand-new outdoor community rink will open at the Caledon East Community Complex (CECC). Situated behind the facility, the new CECC outdoor rink spans 40 feet by 80 feet and is equipped with ice-chilling machinery and over 11,000 feet of rink piping. This innovative setup reduces the dependence on weather conditions, ensuring consistent maintenance and operation. The rink, featuring boards, glass, and hockey nets, will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Mayor Annette Groves expressed enthusiasm about this achievement, stating, “The completion of this exciting new outdoor rink is another significant milestone in the CECC expansion project, demonstrating our commitment to providing spaces for residents to stay active. This refrigeration-chilled rink offers a more reliable outdoor option for the community during the holiday season and throughout winter. I look forward to seeing everyone at the official grand opening event!”
While the CECC outdoor rink will be open for public use starting tomorrow, the official grand opening and naming ceremony are scheduled for Saturday, February 17, 2024, coinciding with Family Day weekend.
In addition to being free for community use, the new outdoor rink aligns with environmental priorities. As part of the Town's strategic focus on environmental leadership, excess heat generated by the refrigeration equipment is repurposed to heat the expanded CECC and the indoor leisure pool. This initiative contributes to Caledon's goal of becoming a net-zero community by 2050. The outdoor community space also supports the Town's commitment to community vitality and livability by offering services and programs that foster a healthy community.
