New Pedestrian Crossover (PXO) Comes to Caledon

August 2, 2023(Caledon) There’s a new crosswalk in Southfields on Dougall Avenue and Tundra Road called a “crossover.”

What is a Pedestrian Crossover (PXO)

A pedestrian crossover (PXO) is a special crossing area that allows pedestrians to safely cross the road where vehicles must stop and allow the pedestrian to cross first (yield to pedestrians.)

PXOs are identified by special pavement markings, crossing signs and flashing lights. Pedestrians have the right of way at PXOs; drivers and cyclists must stop behind the yield line (triangles that look like “shark teeth”) and wait until the pedestrian finishes crossing the road before proceeding. All road users must always obey pedestrian crossover rules or face up to a $1,000 fine and four demerit points.

“This is the first pedestrian crossover on Town roads in Caledon,” said Arash Olia Manager of Transportation Engineering. “The crossings are identified by flashing beacons and are in communities across Ontario. We are teaching residents how to use this new crossing method and have a short video to help show drivers and residents how to use the new pedestrian crossing.”

To avoid fines drivers must stop at the yield line and wait until the pedestrian has finished crossing the road before proceeding. Learn more by watching this video:
