Caledon responds to launch of Regional Government Review consultations

(March 14, 2019) -- As one of the municipalities included in the Government of Ontario’s regional government review, the Town of Caledon is inviting residents and businesses to have their voice heard by participating in the consultation phase of the review, which was announced yesterday.

“It’s vitally important that Caledon’s voice be heard,” said Mayor Allan Thompson.  “We make up over half the land base in Peel, including all the prime agricultural land, we have a unique mix of rural and urban and a rich cultural heritage.  I encourage residents and businesses to get involved and help ensure we have a “made in Peel” solution.”

PREVIOULSY PUBLISHED

(February 8, 2019) -- This morning, Caledon Mayor Allan Thompson and Chief Administrative Officer Mike Galloway met with Special Advisors (Michael Fenn and Ken Seiling) to the Honourable Steve Clark, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, to advocate for Caledon’s interests in the Province of Ontario’s Regional Government Review.

Both Mayor Thompson and the CAO reiterated the important role Caledon plays in the economic and environmental sustainability of the Region of Peel:

  • Caledon makes up 56% of the land area of Peel Region,
  • 100% of Peel's designated Prime Agricultural Land,
  • The vast majority of Peel's designated rural areas and protected countryside, and
  • 408 farms in Peel Region, whose gross receipts total over $94 million, the vast majority which are in Caledon.

“In our discussions with the Special Advisors, we highlighted that while there is always room for improvement, Caledon has worked effectively within the Regional government structure,” stated Mayor Thompson. “In this review process, it is important for them to recognize that every community has unique urban and rural needs and that it’s important for Caledon residents and business  to have a real chance at providing their feedback, working towards a “Made-In-Peel” solution.”

On January 15, 2019, Minister Clark announced the review of eight regional municipalities, including Peel Region.  The Regional Government Review will focus on governance, decision-making and service delivery.  The Government has indicated that consultation will occur over the Spring of 2019 with recommendations coming forward to the Minister in the Summer of 2019.
