Town Acquires Land in Caledon East to Support Downtown Revitalization

CALEDON, ON (October 21, 2024) – The Town of Caledon has purchased a property on Airport Road to support the revitalization and beautification of Caledon East’s downtown core. The Caledon East Revitalization Task Force, a Town-led group of residents, staff, and Council members, has been tapped to help determine the best community use for the property.

“The renewal of downtown Caledon East has been a key priority for me since I joined Council in 2022,” said Councillor Doug Maskell, who represents Ward 3 and is a member of the Task Force. “This was a rare opportunity for the Town to secure land along a major road for resident and public use. Special thanks to Town staff, who worked diligently on this project, and to my Council peers for supporting this acquisition.”

The property is close to a half-acre in size and located adjacent to the Caledon Trailway at the southwest corner of Airport Rd. and Emma St. It is currently vacant and has been used for various uses, including storage and parking, in the past.

“The property has been vacant since I moved to Caledon several decades ago,” said Regional Councillor Christina Early, who represents Wards 1, 2 and 3. “The purchase is a signal to residents and businesses that the Town is committed to revitalizing Caledon East and transforming it into a more attractive and livable village.”

The Caledon East Revitalization Task Force, which will celebrate its first anniversary next month, works with Town staff and actively collaborates with other stakeholders on a wide range of revitalization opportunities. These include preserving of the culture and history of the downtown; building the economic vitality for small businesses; and establishing community projects and events, beautification activities, tourism, wayfinding, and visitor initiatives.

The Task Force will provide input into opportunities for the property’s future use for the community, so Town Council can consider any project needs in its 2026 budget deliberations.
