Town of Caledon Approves 2018 Budget

The Town of Caledon Council approved the 2018 Budget during the Town Council meeting on December 12, 2017, which focuses on providing pivotal community infrastructure and services while keeping tax increases reasonable for Caledon residents and businesses.

“The 2018 Budget is our foundation to help ensure that we are working towards a vibrant and prosperous Caledon,” said Mayor Allan Thompson. “Council, through a public collaborative process, fully debated a budget that is measurable, attainable, realistic and time-sensitive so that the Town can continue to work towards building a better community for its residents.”

The town’s net levy increases by 5.97%, which results in an overall tax levy increase of 2.83%. This equates to a yearly increase of $24.30 for every $100,000 of residential assessment. A typical home in Caledon assessed at $554,000 will see a blended residential tax increase of approximately $135 for 2018.

Highlights of the 2018 Budget

• Strategic Partnership with Peel District School Board for an Artificial Turf Field/Track at Humberview school
• Funding for a BMX/scooter/skateboard track in Alton Park
• Funding to start the design for:
  • Caledon East Community Complex expansion
  • Bolton Seniors Centre expansion
• $16.9 million in the Roads Capital Program including:
  • Shaws Creek Road from Highpoint Sideroad to Caledon East Garafraxa Townline;
  • Castlederg Sideroad from The Gore Road to Duffy’s Lane;
  • Old School Road from McLaughlin Road to Hurontario Street and Heritage Road to Mississauga Road;
  • Mount Hope Road from Cedar Meadows Lane to 300m South of Hunsden Sideroad;
  • George Bolton Parkway from Nixon Road to Coleraine Drive; and
  • Farmers Lane from King Street East to End;
  • Foy Circle from McGregor Drive to End;
• $3.6 million in the Bridge and Culvert Capital Program including:
  • The Grange Side Road East of McLaughlin Road;
  • Shaws Creek Road North of Charleston Sideroad;
  • Innis Lake Road culvert South of Finnerty Sideroad; and
  • Kennedy Road culvert South of Highpoint Sideroad
• Trail improvements totalling $220,000 including:
  • Phase 2 of Palgrave Community Trail;
  • Replacement of the Trailway Bridge at Centreville Creek Road; and
  • Trailway brush clearing
• Final year of funding for the new Community Centre located in Southfields
• Continuation of the Broadband Levy: The special levy proposed for Broadband will generate $300,000 per year which will allow the Town to pursue the build out of broadband infrastructure
• Internet hotspot lending program available at the Town of Caledon Library branches.
