Town of Caledon Approves 2020 Budget

Town of Caledon Council approved the 2020 Budget during the Town Council meeting on December 17, 2019, which focuses on community infrastructure and services while keeping tax increases reasonable for Caledon residents and businesses.

“The 2020 budget will guide the Town in continuing to build a vibrant and prosperous Caledon,” said Mayor Allan Thompson. “Council, through a public collaborative process, fully debated a measurable, realistic budget that will help us continue to deliver quality municipal services to our growing communities, creating a future Caledon we can all be proud of.”

The approved 2020 budget has an overall 2.25% increase, including assumed Region of Peel and school board tax impacts, for homeowners. This represents an approximate $114 property tax increase per typical household in 2020.

Key investments in the 2020 Budget include:

Roads
• $43.2 million in the Roads Capital Program and $5.2 million in the Bridge Capital Program. This will include work such as road reconstruction or rehabilitation, asphalt roads maintenance, surface treatment, design and environmental assessments of various roads.
• $3.7 million for the LED Streetlight Retrofit Phase 2 and Adaptive Controls Program.
• $4.1 million to construct the Albion Vaughan Acoustic Barrier.
• $100,000 for the new Streetlight Request Prioritization and Installation Program.
• Continuation of a $2.0 million annual stormwater capital investment program and additional resources to better plan, coordinate and implement stormwater initiatives across the Town.

Facilities
• $17.5 million to advance the design and construction of Phase 4 of the Caledon East Community Centre. Phase 4 will include a pool, library, and additional meetings spaces. Currently, Phase 3 of this project includes a new gym, fitness center, walking track and community rooms.
• $4.4 million to expand the Caledon Seniors’ Centre (Rotary Place) in Bolton, to include three additional programming room spaces.

Parks
• $1.3. million for improvements to sports fields and playgrounds, including accessibility improvements at North Hill Park, a new neighbourhood park in Caledon East, Caledon Trailway structure replacements, and planning studies for additional hardball diamonds at Emil Kolb Parkway and Duffy’s Lane.

Fire and & Emergency Services
• $1.4 million for the replacement of two large fire apparatus.
• Two new full-time firefighter positions for the Caledon Village fire station for daytime response during the week in the northwest area of the Town.

Land Use Task Force Enforcement
• $500,000 to proactively address illegal parking and storage of tractor trailers and commercial vehicles through a dedicated task force, education and outreach.
