Town of Caledon Council passes motion requesting the Province of Ontario to halt Bill 23

In an emergency Council meeting held today, Caledon Council unanimously voted to ask the province to halt Bill 23, Build More Homes Faster Act and begin fulsome consultation with all municipalities on local impacts.

At today’s meeting staff presented the significant challenges and financial impacts of Bill 23, Build More Homes Faster Act on the Town of Caledon. Councillors heard how proposed changes will severely impact environmental protection; heritage preservation; public participation; loss of parkland; and a municipality's ability to provide future services, amenities and infrastructure. It was discussed how the bill could negatively impact quality of life, residential tax rates, as well as significantly restrict a municipalities ability to provide essential infrastructure and community services.

In January 2023, staff will report back with Caledon specific impacts. There may be unforeseen impacts to the budget process that staff will only be able to identify as more details become available. Staff are also in contact with other municipalities, conservation authorities and levels of government to further evaluate strategies to address the implications of Bill 23 as it rapidly proceeds through constant evolution.
