Town of Caledon disappointed by more scare tactics and misleading allegations from Democracy Caledon
CALEDON, ON (December 10, 2024) – The Town of Caledon has been served with a lawsuit filed by Democracy Caledon that challenges the 12 priority zoning by-laws that the Town passed in June 2024. The suit alleges that the by-laws are beyond the powers of Council’s authority because they do not conform with certain land use policies as set out in the Town’s Official Plan (Future Caledon).
This is inaccurate. The 12 by-laws were enacted in accordance with the provincial legislation, and in keeping with all procedural requirements of both the Planning Act and the Municipal Act.
“It is disappointing that Democracy Caledon is once again using inaccurate and misleading information to raise fears within our community,” said Mayor Annette Groves of the Town of Caledon. “Democracy Caledon recently stoked fear of a 100-200% tax increase when our presented 2025 budget projects a modest 2% tax increase and 1% infrastructure levy. Caledon residents deserve better than to have fake news like this circulating in the community.”
All lands addressed by the 12 zoning by-laws sit within Caledon’s urban boundary or are adjacent to an existing settlement area, as established by the Town’s Official Plan. Secondary plans are required for all parcels addressed by the by-laws as part of the Town’s comprehensive planning approach. Six of the 12 by-laws were subsequently appealed to the Ontario Land Tribunal and were approved following a settlement with the province.
“Our solicitors have advised that this lawsuit is completely without merit, and the Town will be vigorously defending it,” continued Groves.
