Town of Caledon recognized for environmental leadership

The Town of Caledon recently received multiple environmental leadership awards for municipal and corporate achievements in the areas of energy conservation, waste diversion and environmental performance. These environmental leadership efforts will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save on energy costs and reduce land-fill waste.
“Town Staff continue to work collaboratively across departments to reduce our corporate energy consumption and improve our municipality’s environmental performance,” said Mayor Allan Thompson. “Caledon has a long-standing municipal legacy of environmental leadership, and these recent awards and recognition affirm that the Town continues to be on the right path, doing what’s right for the environment.”
In 2018, The Town received multiple awards and formal recognition for its environmental efforts over the past two years:
Don Harrison Energy Champion Award
This award recognizes the efforts Recreation Coordinators Cam Coulter and Phil Lankhof for energy saving projects in building operations through lighting retrofits, ice plant controls, and energy operator training;
Mayor’s Megawatt Challenge Award
This award recognizes the advancement of energy conservation activities at the Mayfield Recreation complex that resulted in the facility to be within 5% of its energy conservation potential.
SaveOn Energy - Energy Innovation Award for best MUSH (Municipal, University, School, Hospital) customer
Nominated by Hydro One, this award recognizes the Town’s uptake of saveONenergy incentives. This includes energy retrofit projects and leadership in creating a culture of conservation through a corporate energy team, establishment of an energy revolving fund, and efforts to monitor energy use in facilities using Natural Resource Canada’’s RETScreen software.
2018 Partners in Project Green - Certificate for Waste Diversion
Recognizing the diversion of 156 kg of clothing and materials from landfill through a staff campaign with Partners in Project Green and Diabetes Canada; and
The Partners in Project Green Legacy Leader
The Town was recognized, along with 22 other businesses and public agencies, for helping launch the Partners in Project Green (PPG) partnership, its ongoing commitments to PPG, and continuing engagement to build the green economy in Peel Region and the GTA.
What’s Next for the Town?
Town staff continue to update the facility Corporate Energy Management Plan, with a stronger focus on reducing corporate wide greenhouse gases. The new Corporate Greenhouse Gas Reduction Framework will inform and prioritize mitigation actions to help further decrease greenhouse gas emissions emitted by the Town over the period 2019-2024.
Additionally, the Town will update its Climate Change Action Plan in 2019/2020, pending budget approval, to support broader community efforts in reducing greenhouse gasses and adapt to the impacts associated with a warming climate.
