When clocks spring forward, change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

March 9, 2023 – Clocks will spring forward one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 12 and Caledon Fire and Emergency Services is recommending residents Check the Power when they Change the Hour.

Take the opportunity on Sunday to check all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. All alarms need to be replaced after 10 years, even those hardwired into your home. Check the expiry date, install new batteries, and push the test button to make sure they are working.

“In order for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to do their job, they need to be working,” explained Deputy Fire Chief Samantha Hoffmann. “Once a year, expiry dates and power supply need to be checked. Old batteries should be replaced with new batteries. When you change the hour on your clocks on March 12, Caledon Fire and Emergency Services wants everyone to take the time to check the power for all alarms.”

To survive a fire, you need to be provided with an early warning and know what to do when the smoke alarms sound. Working smoke alarms are required on every level of the home and outside all sleeping areas. For added protection, it is recommended to also install smoke alarms inside all bedrooms.

“In a fire, seconds can make the difference between life and death," said Deputy Hoffmann. "Most fatal fires occur at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when people are sleeping. A working smoke alarm will wake you up and give everyone in your home a chance to get outside."

Carbon monoxide alarms must be installed outside all sleeping areas if your home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage. Carbon Monoxide is an odorless, colourless and poisonous gas that causes flu-like symptoms. A working carbon monoxide alarm will alert you to the presence of this deadly gas in your home.
