Caledon Fire urges caution as water levels rise

With recent warm weather and rainfall, Caledon Fire and Emergency Services is advising residents to stay clear of rivers, creeks, ponds and other bodies of water. Rising water levels have produced flood conditions in some areas along with fast-flowing waterways that can pose a significant threat to safety.

“Now is the time to be extra vigilant,” said Fire Chief Darryl Bailey. “Parents in particular need to keep children and pets away from danger areas such as lakes, ponds, creeks and any other flowing or still bodies of water.”

The Town has received reports of high water levels and flooding in several areas in the Humber and Credit River watersheds, including the Village of Inglewood, where Fire personnel are visiting affected homeowners to check on their well-being and in Bolton where ice jams are causing the Humber to backup. Fire and Emergency personnel are routinely checking water levels in affected areas around the Town and will continue to do so throughout the evening.

There have also been numerous reports of wet or flooded basements. For homeowners in this situation, call 9-1-1 if it is an emergency. Otherwise, if you have insurance, contact your insurance company immediately to report any problems. Your insurance company can recommend the services of a qualified contractor experienced in mitigating and restoring the damage sustained.

If you notice any areas around the Town that are affected by high/rising water levels, please contact Service Caledon at 905-584-2272 x.7750.
