Caledon installs new Electric Vehicle charging stations

With funding from the Ontario Electric Vehicle Chargers Ontario (EVCO) program, the Town of Caledon recently installed two additional electric vehicle (EV) charging stations: one at Margaret Dunn Library and the other at the Albion Bolton Community Centre. Known as Level Three charging stations, these ‘Fast Chargers’ have the ability to charge an electric vehicle battery up to 80% within 30 minutes. 

With the addition of these two new stations, the Town now owns a total of six EV charging stations, including two “Level Two” charging stations at Town Hall and two in the Green P parking lot in downtown Bolton. The Level Two charging stations can fully charge an EV battery within three to six hours. 

“Caledon has always taken a forward thinking approach to achieving its environmental goals,” said Mayor Allan Thompson.  “These charging stations are an excellent example of that commitment to green initiatives and leveraging funding opportunities.  Our thanks to the Province for creating the EVCO grant program to support low carbon vehicles.”  

Mayor Thompson and special guest the Honourable Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation unveiled the new charging stations today at Albion Bolton United Community Centre. The event also featured electric vehicle experts, representatives from the Town and the Ministry of Transportation and a demonstration of an EV being recharged at one of the stations. 

“This is great news for electric vehicle owners in the Town of Caledon—by building a larger network of public chargers across Ontario, we are ensuring that electric vehicle owners are able to plan longer trips with confidence,” said Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation. 

About the Town of Caledon’s Community Climate Change Action Plan

The Town has been a longtime supporter of electric vehicles as an action to tackle climate change. A greenhouse gas emissions inventory completed in 2007 highlighted that the largest source of local greenhouse gas emissions was from the transportation sector.  As part of its effort to de-carbonize its fleet, the Town has acquired three EVs and will be purchasing two more in 2017.  For more information contact environment@caledon.ca or visit caledon.ca/climatechange.

About The Electric Vehicle Chargers Ontario (EVCO) Program

 

In 2015, the Province of Ontario created an Electric Vehicle Chargers Ontario grant program in support of the Province’s Climate Change Action Plan. $20 million dollars from Ontario’s Green Investment Fund was allocated to build nearly 500 electric vehicle charging stations across approximately 250 locations in Ontario.

This network of electric vehicle charging stations will help tackle the Province’s largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions -- the transportation sector. The Province also supports the purchase of electric vehicles through an incentive program to encourage a shift to low- and zero-emission vehicles.
