Caledon takes action to upgrade broadband infrastructure

Today, the Town of Caledon took an important step towards addressing one of its community’s top priorities, broadband access.  Through a competitive process the Town selected Vianet to install over 8km of fibre optic cable in the south Bolton industrial area over the next few months.  This will significantly boost access to high speed internet service in one of Caledon’s most underserved areas.

“Having access to high speed internet is absolutely vital in today’s economy,” said Mayor Allan Thompson. “The new fibre in the Bolton Industrial Park will provide Caledon businesses access to the services and technology they need to compete locally, nationally or internationally. Our Council has never wavered in trying to find solutions to addressing this vital community need. During this term of Council, we are focused on taking even more action to bring broadband to more homes and businesses in Caledon.”

The 2018-2022 Council Work Plan prioritized “enhance high-speed internet connectivity.” Earlier this year, the Town of Caledon issued an RFP for vendors to provide high speed internet service to at least one of the eight underserviced areas identified in the Town’s Broadband Gap Analysis.  The proposal included access to Town funding of up to $250,000 from the Town’s Broadband Levy.

As part of the agreement Vianet will be investing at least $250,000 in the project, bringing the total investment by the Town and the vendor to more than $500,000.  Once the fibre is in place, businesses within the Bolton Industrial Park will have the ability to access high speed services directly through Vianet.

“Vianet is extremely excited about this opportunity to bring ultra high-speed fibre optic services to the Bolton industrial park,” said Brian McCullagh, Director of Business Development for Vianet.  “This is a great example of how a municipal government along with private industry can work together to upgrade essential infrastructure for the future of smaller Ontario communities.  We thank the Town of Caledon and all those involved who have worked so hard over the past months to bring this project forward and we are eager to get the fibre build started.”

The project is set to begin immediately and be completed by the end of April 2020.
