New Pedestrian Crossovers to Increase Safety in Community

As our communities grow, the Town of Caledon is committed to increasing pedestrian safety through the installation of two new pedestrian crossovers on Learmont Avenue at Benadir Avenue, and Twistleton Street in the Southfields community. To be installed this September, this new type of crossover has been approved for use in Ontario to help keep residents safe and is now appearing across Caledon and Peel Region.

“We welcome the opportunity to explore new ways to improve pedestrian safety in Caledon”, said Ward 2 Regional Councillor Johanna Downey. “Southfields is a vibrant new community with active residents who enjoy exploring their neighbourhood. It only makes sense to install the new crossovers in this part of Caledon, with hopefully more to come throughout the rest of the Town.”

Pedestrian crossovers are commonly located in the middle of a street or at an intersection that does not have traffic lights. These crossovers are identified with signs on both sides of the road and may be accompanied by flashing lights overhead.

By law, drivers, cyclists and other motorists are required to stop at the white triangles located prior to the crossover and wait for pedestrians to cross the full length of the roadway. Failure to comply with this law can result in a fine of up to $1000 and four demerit points, starting September 1, 2018, according to the Ministry of Transportation.

Two pedestrian crossovers have already been installed in Caledon. One crossover is located in Caledon East, on Old Church Road at Marilyn Street, and the other in Palgrave on Highway 50 at the Caledon Trailway.
