The Great Trail Celebrations – Caledon Beginnings

The Trans Canada Trail (TCT), with support from Canadian Heritage, is connecting The Great Trail and the country for a grand celebration on August 26, 2017. Communities across Canada will be celebrating the full connection of The Great Trail and Canada’s 150th on the same date.

“Caledon is known for our beautiful and expansive natural features,” said Mayor Allan Thompson. “The Trans Canada Trail is a treasured part of our trail network that connects our communities to the rest of Canada.”


The foundation for the TCT was first laid in Caledon, in 1995, when the Caledon Trailway was declared the first official segment of the national trail. The following year, the first pavilion of the TCT was built in Caledon East.


“We are, understandably, very proud to be a part of this amazing milestone,” said Mayor Thompson.


Caledon celebrations will begin at 9 a.m. with bike rides starting from Palgrave and Inglewood Stationland Parks. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will celebrate the pavilion refurbishing that has started, followed by the unveiling of a commemorative stone that recognizes the hard work and commitment of volunteers, partners and stakeholders who have created a trail that connects Canada, from coast to coast to coast.


BACKGROUND:
The Trans Canada Trail began as a bold dream in 1992: the idea of creating a trail that would be a gift from Canadians to Canadians. Since then, the TCT, a not-for-profit organization, has been working with donors, partners, governments and volunteers to create The Great Trail. This epic “trail of trails” offers a wide range of outdoor experiences on both land and water routes. Every Canadian province and territory is home to its own stretch of The Great Trail, which is owned and operated at the local level. TCT’s goal is to have The Great Trail connected from coast to coast to coast in 2017, for Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation celebrations.
