Town of Caledon Completes Partners for Climate Protection Program
The Town of Caledon has completed all requirements of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) Program, demonstrating clear leadership on energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions management. Milestones include creating GHG emission inventories, establishing reduction targets, developing an action plan to reduce GHG emissions, implementing the plan and reporting on results.
“I’m very proud of our Energy & Environment team who continue to help us understand the GHG impact and how to take lead on effective energy management,” shared Mayor Thompson. “Caledon has joined just 26 other municipalities across Canada who have achieved this fifth milestone for both corporate and community-wide emissions.”
The PCP program is a five-milestone framework designed to support local governments in the development and implementation of GHG reduction activities and planning at the corporate and community levels.
In February 2018, the Town was formally recognized for achieving the fifth and final milestone, Monitoring and Reporting on progress, at the FCM Sustainable Communities Conference in Ottawa. Some key highlights from the final milestone report include:
- Supporting over 50 Community and 35 School Green Fund grants, totaling $195,309, through the Community and School Green Fund grant programs to-date
- Installing Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations throughout Caledon, including eight Level II and two Level III charging stations (with funding from the Province)
- Distributing approximately 165,842 trees, since 2002, to private land owners in Caledon through the annual Tree Seedling Program, resulting in an approximate reduction of 34,807 tonnes CO2e.
- Establishing a Corporate Energy Revolving Fund to finance corporate energy retrofit projects with the revenues generated by three ground mount microFIT solar projects, energy incentives, and 25% of the savings generated by previously funded projects.
